An Introduction to Gender & Sexual Orientation

Course description

This introductory course is recommended for all school staff and is broken into 3 sections, as follows: 


  • LGBT+ Terminology, Pronouns and Understanding Gender & Sexuality: we all have a gender identity and sexual orientation. This section raises awareness of key terms and concepts that are needed to support developing pupils.
  • Teaching Inclusively: this section looks at how we can engage with young people, free from assumptions about gender, sex and sexuality.
  • Inclusive Language and Resources: exploring strategies and resources for making schools and lessons LGBT+ inclusive for pupils, parents and staff.

Cost

This course is FREE of charge to Manchester schools who have completed the current Health Check. For schools outside of Manchester please contact healthyschools@mft.nhs for fees.

MEET YOUR TRAINER

Cat Chester

Cat was a secondary teacher, PSHE subject lead, regional RSE curriculum advisor, PGCE trainer and professional mentor. Cat has a wealth of experience working with young people, their families and faith communities in the Manchester city and beyond. Cat is passionate to support schools and their communities in the development of their RSE provision and relishes being part of the journey to celebrate and share best practice. Cat is an ambassador for LGBTQ+ rights, and champions gender equality in every sector. In her spare time Cat is a keen gardener, artist, hiker and cook.
