The training offers an introduction to applying the principles of motivational interviewing (MI) to support behavioural change. Delegates will explore how to support children and young people to sustain change through their own motivations. Participants will learn about: the Cycle of Change model and how to apply this to practice, responding to change talk, recognising when a young person expresses a desire to change, and using techniques to strengthen young people's commitment. Delegates will explore how to navigate situations where young people are hesitant, ambivalent, low in confidence, or unwilling to change and how to respond using motivational interviewing principles. This interactive training will also offer delegates the opportunity to practice using OARS (Open-ended questioning, Affirmations, Reflective listening, and Summarising) in relevant scenarios. At the end of the training, participants will receive a toolkit to support them to be able to deliver supportive sessions adopting MI principles.
